President Trump’s firing of FBI Director Comey requires our clear and precise thinking, analysis and action, lest we become mere observers of these events shaping our future.

The three lethal “letters” administered to Comey disclose the corruption in this process as clearly as traces of poison in mummified Egyptians reveal how they were assassinated.  And we need not wait three millennia to discover the motive and method for these dirty deeds done dirt cheap.  It took Trump just 48 hours to tell us, indeed brag, that the story about the firing peddled by the Whitehouse was a lie.

The first letter, actually a legal memorandum, gets an F from your blogger, a litigator and former government prosecutor and law professor.  In advocating that Comey be fired, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein cites not a single case, statute, rule or regulation.  He does quote and paraphrase the opinions of seven former Department of Justice officials and most comically that of Jamie Gorelick.  She currently is constructing and defending the ethics and legality of the seemingly indefensible and disgusting arrangement allowing Ivanka Trump to do her private entrepreneur/Whitehouse official thing.

Letter two is Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ adoption of the Rosenstein rationale for firing Comey and his own recommendation that Trump do it  Three points about this short letter that must be read (all three can be read here) to be fully appreciated.  It pretends that this decision flowed bottom up rather than as it happened Trump downward.

Second, because this was primarily, if not completely, about Comey’s stewardship of the FBI investigation of possible Trump campaign collaboration with Russian interference with the 2016 election, Sessions is recused from making this recommendation.  If, as he falsely contended, this recommendation was based on Comey’s handling of the Clinton email investigation and not even a teeny bit about the Russians, then no memo signed by Rosenstein was needed.  This was the real “tell” in this charade.  Sessions, not Rosenstein, is the Attorney General for all matters not involving the Trussians.

Last, Sessions’ letter is atrocious, even by the standards employed in any charter junior high.  It begins “As Attorney General, I am committed to a high level of discipline, integrity, and the rule of law to the Department of Justice . . .  Have fun diagraming that sentence, and it is downhill from there.

And then there’s Trump’s, widely reported “tell” of “. . . I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions that I am not under investigation.”  Someday, a theme park may be constructed with reenactments of the various stages in the collapse and termination of the Trump presidency.  If that happens, one exhibit and maybe a ride, will recreate Comey’s coming testimony about those three occasions.  But for now, just please read the three letters and know the end of this nightmare is closer due to their sloppiness and manifest (now admitted) dishonesty.
