HL 33 – How’s He Doing?

Hopelessly Liberal’s readers are waterlogged after a deluge of hundred day assessments.  As promised, here is ours, but mercifully eschewing, with one exception, a listing and critique of major achievements and failures.  Instead, for one day H.L. becomes a distillery, delivering the essence of Trump as POTUS, 100 proof and aged for one hundred and three days.

Warren Buffett

In the documentary “Becoming Warren Buffet” the Oracle of Omaha comments on the extraordinary advantage he had toward becoming one of the world’s leading philanthropists and at times its richest person, saying it was the lucky accident of American birth.  Your blogger has felt fortunate that way since early childhood and the feeling steadily intensified with extensive international travel and dealings.  But upon inspection this morning, the passport seems a little smaller and worse for wear with the blue streaked with grey.

Caligula (Malcolm McDowell)

Americans now regularly get condolences from friends and got a nation to nation “cheer up” from our neighbors to the north.  Our allies no longer trust us very much.  This includes those in NATO, NAFTA and other alliances, sacred and profane, as well as those in treaties in formation, such as the Paris climate change accord.  These friends strain to interpret the tweets, decipher who in the palace guard is currently in favor and suppress their disgust while meeting with Jared and Ivanka in order to court favor with the American and modern version of Caligula.  Tortoise-like, China plods forward in what Asian affairs expert/author Michael Pillsbury calls “The Hundred Year Marathon” to replace the United States as the world’s leader.  For your blogger the worst and most representative moment occurred when Trump, on air with Bill O’Reilly (who else) downplayed Putin’s killings by comparison with an America that’s “got a lot of killers. What? you think our country’s so innocent?”  The statement and essence of the man who promised to “make America great again.”

Justice Gorsuch

Trump mentions first, and points over and over again, to the swift nomination and confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to SCOTUS.  Indeed, da first time in da first hundred days in a long, long time.  And the liberal media dutifully and stupidly credits that as an achievement.  It is not the case that each new president has a SCOTUS seat to fill but that Trump just did it faster.  He had that opportunity because of Mitch McConnell’s and the Republican caucus’ defiance of the Senate’s constitutional “advice and consent” duty.  The choice of Gorsuch was farmed out to the Heritage Foundation and filling the seat was merely and mathematically mechanical.  That is once McConnell reduced the votes needed from 60 to 51.  Associate Justice Gorsuch is the product and collateral damage from a constitutional breach and abdication of one of a president’s most important prerogatives.  Trump’s gift to America that will keep on giving.
