This post must begin with a quotation from HL 98, posted during the early Spring 2020 primary season:
“Biden is a melting ice cube. Those of us who have closely watched as time ravaged the once sharp or even brilliant minds of loved ones and colleagues, recognize what is happening to the good soldier Joe”
That quote is a must not merely as an “I told you so” but because it supports what the New York Times and Wall Street Journal reported last week; a length of term coverup of our President’s deficit and steady decline in mental acuity. And more importantly it points to what those two “papers of record” failed to do and say. That they and the rest of establishment American press were part and parcel of that coverup. They must not do it again, but might. For fear of pissing off Trump, who will scream about how they hid Biden’s condition.
Owners and publishers at the Washington Post, Disney/ABC News and the Los Angeles Times have already muffled their news and editorial divisions while cozying up to Trump. His mental decline is at least as obvious and pronounced as Biden’s was in 2020.
And like Biden, Trump will steadily melt and increasingly be manipulated by his palace guard. It happened last week with Musk and other handlers getting Trump to either reverse his position on a bipartisan continuing resolution to fund the government or more likely getting him to oppose the measure, which he had little awareness of before Musk began tweeting.
Back in 2020 the “melting ice cube” observation went viral and was quoted in publications as near as New York Magazine, the National Review and the Chicago Tribune and as far away as newspapers in Australia. But only after Biden’s disastrous debate performance in June did mainstream American press investigate and report what had been obvious for years.
HL periodically revisited and chronicled the pace of Biden’s decline. In HL 145 of September 25, 2021, I reported “[h]e’s melting” citing how in his foreign policy sweet spot he seemed oblivious to his brain trust’s advice in the leadup to the retreat from Afghanistan and in the announcement of the US/UK/Aussie deployment of nuclear subs in the Pacific.
In HL 177 of November 8, 2023 “Joe Biden It’s Time for Your Goldwater to Nixon Moment.” I pleaded with Pelosi, Schumer, Durbin, Klobuchar, Gavin Newsom and Sherrod Brown to collectively deliver the “you must not run” and “I will” messages as Barry Goldwater had similarly delivered a message from the Republican Senate and House caucuses to Richard Nixon, less than a month before his resignation in August 1974
And yet again despairingly in HL 181, “Jill Biden and Commander Bite America” of February 27, 2024 that reported loss of confidence in the First Lady to deliver and enforce the message which at that point only she could. Last week’s Journal and Times’ coverage makes clear that Jill was cover-upper-in-chief, as suggested in HL 181.
It should be self-evident why mainstream press diligence in the matter of Trump’s decline is crucial. But in an era where it’s evident that self-evidence is in short supply, stating what should be obvious becomes necessary.
The world is on the precipice of fire with nukes threatened by Kim and Putin and tacitly by others. There are ominous signs of potential new pandemics. China steadily encircles Taiwan and proceeds with other measures designed to make the Western Pacific into a Chinese lake. Bad things will happen when the person with the greatest power to deploy nukes, appoint, veto, pardon and impose tariffs operates without a full deck.
In a much less perilous world, we saw how that worked with second term Ronald Reagan and Iran-Contra. And far worse we just experienced it with a diminished Biden failing to do what might have prevented the imminent debacle that Trump 2.0 most likely will be. “NO JOKE”
But there are debacles and then there are outright disasters that might be prevented. A press, this time doing its job, is necessary for that to happen.
